James Robert Shelton “Mel”, age 78, of Nicholasville, Kentucky, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at his home. He was born on January 14, 1948, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Robert Shelton and Thelma Wilkerson Shelton. James was a proud veteran of the United States Army, honorably serving and completing 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. His service reflected his sense of duty, resilience, and sacrifice. These values shaped his life. In 1974, he married the love of his life, Mary Shelton, and they blended their families into a home. He worked tirelessly to support his family, running the “Shelton Shell” full-service gas station for many years. He was known for his strong work ethic, his integrity, and his willingness to help others. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Mary Shelton, as well as his siblings, Lydia Horton, Joann Allen, Paul Shelton, John Shelton, Sarah Allen, and David Shelton. He is survived by his children, Ray Miller (Gail), Tina Maynard (Albert), Susan Feltner, and Keturah Harris (Tony), 7 grandchildren, one he lovingly raised as his own, and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Lighthouse Baptist Church, with Pastor Tommy Morrow officiating. The burial will follow in Camp Nelson National Cemetery with Gary “G” Winkle, Bradlee Winkle, Gary Winkle, Nick Beehler, Noel Warf, and Doug Shartzer serving as bearers. The visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until the time of the service on Friday, January 30, 2026, at the church.
