James Russell Johns

James Russell Johns, 72, of Wilmore, left his earthly home on Monday, July 27, 2026. He was born in Wilmore, Kentucky on September 27, 1953, to the late James William and Marcella Delaney Johns. James grew up in Wilmore and was one of thirteen children.

As a young man, James proudly joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served his country as a Field Radio Operator, including active duty in Vietnam. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Meritorious Mast, and the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge. James was honorably discharged as a Sargent in 1979.

When James returned to Jessamine County, he worked for the City of Wilmore. As James grew older, he enjoyed a simple, hardworking life that reflected his deep love for the outdoors. He especially enjoyed being on a tractor and spent many years working on several farms around Jessamine County. He found joy in the hard work, the land, and the simple moments that came with life outdoors. In his spare time, he could be found fishing with his cousin, Ron. James also enjoyed hunting, watching horse races and was an avid Raiders fan.

James will be remembered by his daughters, Stephanie Johns Smith and her husband Marcus, and Jamie Johns Goldman and her husband Nathan; as well as Michelle Smith, whom he considered a bonus daughter. He was a faithful grandfather of Demi Johns, Tylar Smith, Cory Smith, Samantha Goldman, Natalie Goldman, and Nataniel Goldman; and a proud great grandfather of Owen Abshear, Daphne Gartner, Aurora Jo Gooch, and Alice Ann Smith. He leaves wonderful childhood memories with his sisters Debbie Duncan, Linda Woolums, Judy Pigg, Shiela Davis, and Marcy Underwood. He will also be deeply missed by his loyal friend, Danny Corbitt, whom he spent countless days with, especially during his cancer treatments. In addition to his parents, James joins his siblings George Johns, Bill Johns, Doug Johns, Cecil Johns, Betty Ann Gullickson and Mary Cockrell in eternal rest.

James will be remembered for his love of family, his hardworking spirit, his years of service to our country, and the many memories that he created with those he loved. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
