Claude S. “Sam” James

February 4, 1934 – January 22, 2026

Claude Samuel James “Sam” of Nicholasville, Kentucky passed away the evening of January 22, 2026. He was born the only child to the late Claude Goodner James and Ellen “Nell’ Tippens James on February 4, 1934 in Independence, Missouri. He graduated from Northeast High School in 1952 and went on to earn his degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Missouri. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio. While at WPAFB, he met the love of his life, Frances Karen Chaney. They were married in Pikeville, Kentucky on October 24, 1959. They then settled in Independence, Missouri until they transferred to Santa Maria, California. From there, Sam lived in Huntsville, Alabama; Longmont, Colorado; and Nicholasville, Kentucky, all during his employment at IBM(Lexmark) from which he retired in 1991.

Sam was a member of Troy Presbyterian Church in Versailles, Kentucky, where he and Fran were active members for many years. Being the engineer he was, he enjoyed running the audio equipment during church services. Sam was very quick to tackle repairs around the house, and really seemed to enjoy running the tractor to keep up his five-acre home. He loved to eat! Tacos were a favorite, as well as chili, and of course dessert, especially ice cream.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Fran, of 66 years; three children – Karen (Arlie) Mullins, Melissa Fordham, and Jon (Renee) James; 4 grandchildren – Nick (Jeannette) Mullins, Josh (Jessie) Fordham, Heather (Jeff) Morris, and Tyler (Brittany) Fordham; and 5 great-grandchildren (with another due in August).

The family would like to thank Bluegrass Hospice Care, as well as Cedarhurst Memory Care of Nicholasville for their loving care and compassion.

Details regarding a memorial service will be announced by the family at a later time. In lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions can be made to Troy Presbyterian Church, 11021 Troy Pike, Versailles, Kentucky 40383.

This obituary was lovingly submitted by his family.  Betts & West Funeral Home is honored to serve Sam and his family in their time of need.
