Wilmore

Clarence W. "Red" Stephens, age 99, of Nicholasville, Kentucky, passed away today, July 1st 2026, peacefully surrounded by his family.

Born in 1926, Red lived a remarkable life that spanned nearly a century, passing just 48 days shy of his 100th birthday. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and served with honor in the 106th Infantry Division during World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, one of the war's most pivotal and difficult campaigns.

Following his military service, Red returned home and built a life centered on family, hard work, and the simple joys that made him happiest. He shared 70 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Bettye Louise Stephens, who preceded him in death.

Red dedicated 40 years of service to GTE/Verizon in Lexington, Kentucky, where he built a respected career before retirement.

Red was known for his love of golf and softball, remaining active and competitive well into his nineties. Whether on the golf course or the softball field, he enjoyed the camaraderie of friends and the challenge of the game. His determination, sense of humor, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

He is survived by his son, James (Teresea) Stephens, and his daughters, Karen Barjuca and Kathy Stephens, along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and friends who will cherish his memory and carry forward his legacy.

Visitation services will be held at Betts & West Funeral Home in Nicholasville, Kentucky, on Wednesday, July 8Th, 2026, from 11:30 am to noon for family only, then noon to 2:00 pm for all others. Funeral services will follow at Camp Nelson National Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Lynn Beach, where Red will be laid to rest beside Bettye with full military honors at 2:30 pm

The family extends their gratitude to all who have offered prayers, support, and kindness during this time.

Red belonged to what has often been called the Greatest Generation. His life was defined by service, devotion to family, perseverance, and a love for living life to its fullest. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. Pallbearers will be Ebenezer Mollel, Frank Palumbo, Andrew Palumbo, Parker McCarty, Andy McCarty, and Wil Begley.
