Mark Elliott Johnson

Mark Elliott Johnson, 66, of Wilmore, KY passed away on January 21, 2021 in the hospital fighting Covid 19. He was born on September 3, 1954 in S. Charleston, WV to Paul and Mary (Painter) Johnson.
Mark grew up in S. Charleston and graduated from S. Charleston High School in 1972. After high school he held various jobs, such as surveying, before feeling God’s calling into the mission field through God’s Army. He planted trees for them in California, Oregon, and Washington to help them fund a Christian school. He moved to Maryland, worked in construction and at Amtrak, and eventually worked for Harford County Government for 25 years until his retirement in December, 2015. Shortly after retirement he and his wife, Melissa, moved to Wilmore, KY, a place both had wished to move to unbeknownst to each other.
Over the years, Mark was always involved in his church – helping to build a church, working on various projects for different churches, plus vacuuming chairs and serving on Prime Timers committee in his current church, Wilmore Free Methodist. He supported various Christian missionaries. In 2008 he also supervised a halfway house for men recovering from previous challenges to re-enter society on a firm foundation.
Mark is preceded in death by his parents Paul Johnson, Mary Johnson Rugel, and step-father John Rugel
Mark is survived by his loving wife, Melissa Flowers of Wilmore, KY; sisters, Paulette (Ken) Fricker of Kannapolis, NC, Gloria (Roger) Boggess of S. Charleston, WV, and step-sister Carolyn Rugel of Russia; children Bethany (Lee) Hall of Milton, WV, Abigail Johnson Smith and Benjamin Luke Johnson, both in Maryland, as well as three grandchildren, Dax Johnson and Tara and Tiffanie Hall. He became a step-father to Phillip and Granddad to four step-grandchildren, Pierce, Tyler, Donald, and Brianna.
A memorial service will be held at Wilmore Free Methodist Church, 1200 Lexington Road, Wilmore, KY 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 13, 2021, with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM prior to service.
