Harland Richard Lutz

Harland Richard (Robley) Lutz, 95, of Wilmore, Kentucky died on August 22, 2023 at Wesley Village in Wilmore. He was born on February 5, 1928 in Mitchell, South Dakota to Eva Kinsley Lutz and Edwin Albert Lutz of Mitchell, but was raised by his mother’s sister, Mabel Kinsley Robley, and her husband, George Robley, of Davison County, South Dakota. He married Marilyn Willetta Perkins of Butte, Montana on June 30, 1951 in Nampa, Idaho. They had three sons: David Wayne (Amelia), Robley John (Cheryl), and Daniel Arthur. He attended a one-room school, Union #9, moved to Madison, South Dakota, and then to Nampa, Idaho. He graduated from Northwest Nazarene Academy in 1946, Northwest Nazarene College in 1951 (A.B., Physics & Mathematics), and George Peabody College for Teachers in 1954 (M.A., Teaching of Mathematics). He had advanced education at the University of Kansas, the University of Miami (Florida), the University of Kentucky, and Citrus College (California). He held a Certificate in Data Processing. He taught secondary and college mathematics, physics, and computer programming at the McCallie School (Tennessee), 1954-57, Asbury College (Kentucky), 1957-68 and 1970-99, and Azusa Pacific College (California), 1968-70. At Asbury he was also the Director of Administrative Data Processing, 1970-90, and Data Base Programmer (1991-96). He was a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Mathematical Association of America, the American Scientific Association, and the Data Processing Management Association, active in Kentucky, regional, and national activities. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, 1946-48 and 1951-52, as an electrician and electronics technician in Hawaii, the Pacific, and off the coast of China on several amphibious transports. He was active for forty years with the Boy Scouts of America, holding numerous leadership positions, for which he was awarded the Silver Beaver by the Blue Grass Council. In the Wilmore United Methodist Church he was Sunday School Secretary, Scouting Representative on the Commission on Education. Finance Chairman, and Finance Secretary, and was active with the United Methodist Men and The Walk to Emmaus. He was interested in the correlation between Scripture and natural science. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marilyn, sisters Marjorie Sougstad (South Dakota), Joyce Mudget (California), Dorothy Geidl (South Dakota), Lavilla Robley (South Dakota), brother Arthur Lutz (Oregon), and son Daniel Lutz (Kentucky). He is survived by his sons David in South Bend, Indiana and Robley in Louisville, Kentucky, seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the Great Commission Fellowship in Wilmore at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 26, with Pastor Jason Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in the Wilmore Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Michael Lutz, Nicholas Lutz, Arvid Metcalf, Robert Olivam, Byron Revel, and Paul Southgate. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church.
