George William Pope

July 22, 1920 — November 24, 2011

Dr. George W. Pope, PhD Lt. Col. Ret (US Army), 91, died Nov. 23, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 69 years Nancy Herrington Pope, two daughters Gracia (Tom) O-Brien & Lindsay Walker, four grandchildren; Erin & Alexa O-Brien, Andrea & Matthew George Walker and a very special extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, two sisters & a son-in-law. He volunteered for the army the day after Pearl Harbor with a military career spanning 39 years. Among his medals were the Bronze Star, Croix de Guerre, & the Purple Heart. He graduated with a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Kentucky. After retirement from IBM he taught at UK & Centre College. He was an active member of the Nicholasville United Methodist Church (NUMC), served on the Jessamine Co School & Fair Board, was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart & a KY Colonel. He enjoyed racing homing pigeons & coin collecting. Service will be Noon Monday at Nicholasville United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Snyder officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Nelson National Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 7pm at Betts & West Funeral Home. Bearers will be Wayne, David, Darryl & John Herringon, Bill Heichelbech & Tom O-Brien. Honorary Bearers will be The Wise Sunday School class.
