Clarence Cobb

Clarence Cobb, 83, passed away Friday, January 18, 2013, at the Four Courts Cherokee Park Nursing Home in Louisville, Kentucky.

He was born to Meritt and Virginia 'Jennie' Burdine Cobb in Nicholasville, Jessamine County, Kentucky, on October 14, 1929. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Spencer Lamar Cobb, and stillborn son, Martin Cobb.

He attended school in Jessamine County. He worked on the family farm until he joined the Navy on January 5, 1951. He served in the Navy at the Florida Keys during the Korean War until December 20, 1954, earning the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

He was trained as a mechanic and became an employee of Greyhound after his honorable discharge. He married Emma Louise (Whitlock) Moberly, a native of Madison County, Kentucky, on July 28, 1956. He became an instant father to Louise's three girls, Elizabeth Jean, Charlotte Ann, and Vivian Marie. He worked at Greyhound for 35 years until his retirement February 1, 1990. While at Greyhound he moved and worked in Lexington, Kentucky, and Chamblee, Georgia, finally transferring and settling in Middletown, Kentucky in 1964, and eventually in Louisville in 1965.

While living in Georgia, he was baptized at the Doraville Baptist Church in Georgia in 1960. Also, their daughter, Charlotte married Roger Scarbrough in 1962 and stayed in Georgia. In Louisville, Clarence joined the St. Matthews Baptist Church in 1965. He volunteered there as a bus mechanic for the church bus and was often the driver when groups went on various outings.

Clarence and Louise became proud parents to Virginia Lynn Cobb on November 28, 1964. A few years later in 1967, their premature son was stillborn. Jenny was married to John Reinhart in 1996, and shortly afterwards, Clarence became a Kentucky Colonel, an honor he was proud of.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 55 years, Louise; their four daughters, Jean, Charlotte, Vivian, and Virginia 'Jenny'; their two son-in-laws, Roger Scarbrough and John Reinhart; their five grandchildren, Sharon Leigh Baker, Stephanie Lynn Miller, Amy Lou Robbins, Zachary William Cobb, and Isabelle Grace Reinhart; their five great-grandchildren, Katherine Leigh Baker, Alexander and Andrew Baker; and Brooke and Jake Miller. He is also survived by his two nieces, Joy Blackford and JoAnn Giles and JoAnn's husband, George.

A viewing and services will be held at St. Matthews Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 22, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. with service at 1:00 p.m.. Later that day, there will be a viewing at Betts and West Funeral Home in Nicholasville from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at Betts and West on Wednesday, January 23, at 11:00 a.m. with a private family burial at the Cobb Family Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to the Baptist Missionary Fund through the St. Matthews Baptist Church.
