Anna Drummond Stevenson

Anna Drummond Stevenson, 89, of Wilmore, Ky, died October 24, 2021, at Wesley Village in Wilmore, Ky.

Mrs. Stevenson was born August 2, 1932, in Paulsboro, New Jersey, to Benjamin and Louisa Nelson Drummond. When Anna was just 14-years-old, she experienced the heartbreaking loss of her mother. As the oldest girl in her large family, Anna took on the heavy responsibilities of providing care in her home. She especially gave herself to loving and raising her sister, Bonnie, who was seven when their mother passed.

Anna attended Paulsboro High School where she served in the Color Guard and was voted “most popular” in her senior class. After high school, Anna was hired as an executive administrative assistant at Socony-Mobil of Southern New Jersey. She loved this job and the freedom it gave her to travel into the city of Philadelphia for dress shopping.

Anna met Harry Richard Stevenson, they fell in love and were married in June of 1954. They soon added to the family Cynthia Ann and Laura Anne. With the help of Harry’s father, they built their dream home on Cohawkin Road in Clarksboro, NJ.

In 1961, the Stevenson’s life would change. Both Harry and Anna attended the Billy Graham Crusade at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia in August of that year. As George Beverly Shea led the massive crowd in singing “Just As I Am,” both Harry and Anna rose from their seats and went to the center of the Stadium to make Jesus Christ the center of their lives.

After Richard Mark was born in 1963, Harry and Anna said “yes” to Christ’s call on their lives to serve Jesus as a pastor. They sold their dream home, left their jobs and traveled to Asbury College in Wilmore, KY. They moved into a cinderblock duplex to begin their training to be a pastor. Anna soon got a job as a secretary to the college registrar, Dr. Louis Caster. Those years in Wilmore would mark them and instill a deep love for what is now Asbury University. Harry would later serve the university on their Board of Trustees.

After college and seminary, Anna faithfully supported Harry’s pastoral ministry in South Jersey United Methodist Churches in Gloucester City, Pennsville, and Turnersville. After Harry retired from full-time ministry, their pastoral service continued. They served faithfully in The Great Commission Fellowship, Avalon Beach Church, The Wilmore Free Methodist Church and even while they lived at Wesley Village. For almost 60 years, they loved people and shared Christ.

Anna Stevenson is survived by her children: Cindy and Mark Bules, Laura and David Hunter and Richard and Tania Stevenson. Harry and Anna have 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

There will be a service celebrating Anna Stevenson’s life and ministry at Betts and West Funeral Home on Thursday, October 28th at 2pm, with a viewing starting at noon.
